Christmas Meal 2022

A Fabulous afternoon for the annual RAFA Christmas Meal in Dec 2022. Thoroughly enjoyed by all.

An amazing night was had by all at our 1940s D-Day celebration party in Jun 19. Amanda and Del did us proud providing nostalgic entertainment with music from the era. Lots of people dressed in 1940s costume and looked the part on the dance floor. With a great raffle from John and a generous donation of a lighter from Brian that was auctioned we raised a total of £545.15 for Wings, so a successful night all round.

Guest Speaker Joe Marsden, 5 June 2017

If you didn’t make it along to hear Joe Marsden talk about his ‘Life as a Vulcan Pilot’ then you missed a fascinating and entertaining evening. This was a very interesting and enlightening talk with a good mix of humour to keep your interest.

During the presentation by Joe Marsden, reference was made to an interesting event in the early 60’s where RAF Vulcans’ successfully penetrated the radar of the North American Aerospace Defence Command, thought impossible by the US at the time. These exercises were known as Operation Sky Shield 1,11 and 111, and were the largest military aviation exercises ever held, to determine whether an attack by the USSR across Canada was possible. An account of these exercises can be found by logging in to:- https://www.flightcrate.com/single-post/2016/09/10/Operation-Sky-Shield-I-56-Years-ago-today-RAF-B2-Vulcans-attack-the-US

Visit to Fishbourne Roman Palace, 24 May 2017

Sunshine and clear blue skies welcomed us to Fishbourne for our visit to the Roman Palace. If Professor Barry Cunliffe of Sussex Archaeological Society had been there, he would have thought that it was a Cohort of a Roman Legion about to occupy the palace instead of a contingent from Fareham Branch RAFA. Ted and Betty riding stately in their chariots, Dave and Al wielding their swords (walking sticks), legionnaires marching in unison, looking forward to rest and relaxation after a strenuous march from Fareham.

It would be impossible to describe the individual feelings of those who attended, but suffice to say that we were all greatly impressed with the skill and dedication of the archaeologists who have brought this prime example of Roman Britain back to life. Perhaps more importantly, the skill and patience of those artisans who decorated the walls and floors with such magnificent mosaics, nearly two thousand years ago.

Retiring to The Bull’s Head in Fishbourne village for lunch, we were treated to a fine and varied menu at reasonable cost. Should anyone find themselves passing Fishbourne in the future, this would make an ideal stopping off point.
